A number of public schools in Philadelphia are under investigation by state or local authorities. Many are suspected of cheating to boost schools’ performance on Pennsylvania state tests in 2011 and years before that. The academic ratings for public schools on GreatPhillySchools are based on 2012 Pennsylvania tests given after the state introduced new testing safeguards to prevent cheating.
The Pennsylvania Department of Education has declined to reveal publicly the schools under investigation. But the Philadelphia Public School Notebook—citing confidential documents it obtained—published in August 2012 a list of over 50 Philadelphia schools under investigation for altering student results on state tests from 2009-11.
Separately, administrators at the following schools face charges of fraud, obstruction of justice, conspiracy and witness tampering in a case involving embezzlement of school funds. [See FBI press release here]
